Contractor Management: Building Stronger Operator-Contractor Relationships
“Most of the challenges come as a byproduct of the relationship”…As we worked to transform contractor management in BHP, one thing became clear – the contractor-operator relationship had an outsized impact on performance.
We needed to learn from the ones who were doing the work – who were actually the ones at risk – and we needed to learn how our actions “in the ivory tower of planning” were impacting the work and workers through a ripple effect.
Opening the doors to learn from contractors’ experience led us to a pivotal question:
- How do we create a bridge that balances financial, operational and legal risks for both operators and contractors while fostering better learning from contract partners?
- Where do we need project control for good reason?
- Where do we need to loosen constraints to allow for innovation and learning?
Two things fundamentally changed:
1) We systemized a shift in resources away from thousands of hours inefficiently auditing and vetting toward more meaningful, intentional engagements, and
2) We integrated the systems from supply/contracts, operations, and HSE into one framework to spotlight and work through competing interests
We’ve carried on that work at Nova Path Risk & Safety for high-risk operators and contractors alike, but only through the experiences of learning what actually matters along the way.
